If you didn’t have a chance to read Part One or Part Two of, My journey from drugs to herbs, you can go here and here.
Something you may not know about me is I have asthma. Most of the time, I don’t have too much trouble with it, but when I inhale something I am allergic to like cigarette smoke, burning oil, certain burning woods, and whatnot, I can have a severe attack. In 2008, I had such a severe attack that I was not moving any air in my lungs at all. But again, I can go long periods without any trouble and then all of a sudden, something bothers me and I have an attack.
Therefore, I decided…recently to add some herbs for upper respiratory health for that reason. I have a friend who sells Maximum Vitality Partners herbal products. They carry an herb that helps build stamina and endurance and is really good for those of us with asthma. I gave it a try and I really like it. Xtra Mile has really helped with my lungs, especially during this horrible allergy season we are having here in Tulsa.
The way it works is it helps the body utilize oxygen better so that when the body needs to respond to something, it has the ‘endurance’ and ability to do so. Thus, now that I am on the Xtra Mile, my body has more energy and can cope with any allergic responses I have to pollen and handle much better.
I also added another herb for my upper respiratory health - New Chapter’s, Sinus Take Care. I discovered the sister product when I got sick at the beginning of this year with that bug I couldn’t get rid of. In just three weeks of being on the Sinus and Respiratory, I was completely well.
By taking the two above herbs together, I am not spending my spring (in Tulsa) in a darkened room with raging migraines as the result of allergy season! Everyone I know is having problems, but the worst I have had is a tickle in my throat and sneezing. (except when I go outside – then I have had nausea and dizziness). Again, it is amazing what the right herb will do for a person.
In addition to the asthma diagnosis, the VA diagnosed me with IBS. I don’t personally agree with that diagnosis. Despite that, I definitely have had a lot of ‘gut’ problems and decided a few years ago that I needed to tackle it.
I whole-heartedly believe that our food supply is so tainted and nutrient deficient, that unless we eat food directly from a farm that turns the land over every 7 years and doesn’t use chemicals, we have very little chance of getting the appropriate nutrients we need to keep the gut running efficiently. In addition, I recently read that our bodies come into contact with 10,000 chemicals a day! That is mind blowing!
After a friend suggested I add a digestive aid to my regime because I had to have my gall bladder removed, I decided to take it one step further. I added the recommended digestive enzymes, as well as, a ‘live’ pro-biotic and a nightly colon cleanser. Again because of a poor diet and/or a poor food supply, our bodies just aren’t getting what they need in order to properly function on their own.
I don’t know how many people I have suggested these three (3) herbs to, but all of them have had the same success I am having. I no longer have bloating, gas, pain, diarrhea, constipation, belching … none of it.
I take New Chapter’s (live) pro-biotic (which means it has to be refrigerated) Immunity, at night time as I don’t personally like taking them during the day. I also take Enzymatic Fiber Fusion Cleanse at night as well. I take four capsules and the next day, I am regular as rain. Actually, more regular than rain!
The thing I really like about the Fiber Fusion is that it, too, is tailorable to what you need. I take the recommended 4 a night because my system is so darn sluggish, although I have friends who only take one or two at night and that works for them. Again however, I am right a rain when I take the fiber fusion and the pro-biotic.
The digestive aids are also customizable. I take 2 at every meal except when I eat gluten products or meat products. Then I up it to 3/4 to ensure that I can digest my food. I use a product by Source Naturals which works really well for me and is cost affective. Daily Essential Enzymes comes in a bulk bottle and it usually last me 2-3 months. I can really tell when I don’t take the Enzymes. I have a lot of bloating and intestinal discomfort/pain and can even end up getting really constipated.
For me, of all the herbs I take, the herbs for my gut are the most critical. Seventy percent of our immune system lives in our gut. If the gut is a mess, so is everything else. If I made no other change in my life, I would make that one.
Determined to continue forward,

Ooohhh….me too, Dominique….I have found live pro biotics, degiestive enzymes..and the like to work wonders for me! I agree whole heartedly about 70% of our immune system living in our gut.
I grew up on a farm, such as the one you mentioned. My dad never used a chemical…anywhere. Large gardens, all of our own beef. I never realized how good I had it….wish I could go back to living like … and eating like that….again.

Linda – I love your responses to my posts!
I recently joined a local co-op so 90% of my food is farm raised. It really is different. I feel ‘stronger’ eating this way and my gut feels much better. I actually am getting to where ‘regular’ food is just not tasty any morel.
When you share on Thursday about costs and how to reduce costs
Can you answer this question — Are all the the products you
mentioned New Chapter and Earthlinks?
Prayer is needed as I’m feeling depressed about losing Sammy. I pray he will go in his sleep but I don’t think this happens often with
Kidney failure. Thank you for being so kind to me.
Patricia – any product that I have mentioned, I have created a link to where I buy them. The links are usually highlighted in different colors. (I will double check that to make sure.)
Sammy has kidney failure. Oh my gosh. I will be praying for you and Sammy. Gosh this is just breaking my heart. I know this might sound odd but let you self move through the process of grief. Whatever you feel is okay to feel. My prayers and hugs are being sent your way.
Note: I just went to my blog the way you do, and if you look at the post you will see words that are in red. Those are links. If you click on them they will take you to another page that is related to the subject. So for instance, if I have Xtra Mile in red, you can click on it and you will end up on a page where you can purchase it and/or read about it. Hope that helps.
8:07 p.m. on Wednesday night: Lord, I just lift up Patricia. I just ask for you to wrap your loving arms around her and no that you have not left nor forsaken her. I ask that you would give her the super-natural strength she needs to help Sammy in this moment. Help her to help him prepare to be with you. I ask farther that you would enable you spirit to fall in that room right now. May your presence overwhelm Patricia. Bring her under your wing and protect her, Father. And Lord, bring Patricia to my mind so that I might stand in the gap for her during this most difficult time. Thank you for cause our paths to cross. Amen.
8:32 a.m. – still praying for you.
I am just now getting to read your “herb” posts. I am thrilled you have found such a workable routine to help yourself. Have you ever used coconut oil? I love it for its many uses (eating, skin and hair), but am really curious to know if anyone with our medical issues has really had success with it? Today I was just reading about a detox using coconut oil and am a little fearful to try it. I am going to ask my doc when I see her next week.
Susie
Susie – No, I haven’t headed towards coconut oil. I have to be honest. I spend a lot of time researching the herbs and getting recommendations from people who live and breath herbs and a natural life stile like Mike Adams the Health Ranger. I also am careful about adding one herb at a time and being on it for a month or two before I add another one, that way I know the that the herb works and that I don’t have any problems with it. Sometimes I don’t find any benefits to an herb and if that is the case then I try a different product. For instance, the herbal vitamin I am taking is doing it for me. I have no doubt it is a great product, it just isn’t working for me. So next month I will switch my vitamin to New Chapter and try if for a month. It will probably work since I am having such good results but if not I move on and try another product till I find one that works for me.
Usually, I am good at choosing the right one for me because I have narrowed down which products work for me and which don’t.
I use a product by Enzymatic for my detox. They have a mild one that I like. I had never thought of detoxing with coconut oil? hmmmm
Also, I drink this tea called Calli and it is a detox tea that tastes yummy. You can drink it every day and I have been drinking it for several years now. I love the cinnamon flavored Calli. It’s my favorite. Anyway, I might look into the coconut oil thing in the future.
Well, I don’t really know about the “healing coconut oil” thing either, but I love the stuff for my hair, skin and to saute my veggies in, as well as a spread for toast. Of course only extra virgin and organic. So we will see if I ever really do the detox one day.
I like that you have done this series of blogs about your experience with herbs. We are all so different in the reactions so it is really neat to see what works for us all.
I hope you are having a good day.
Susie
Susie – Thank you. Have a great weekend.
This series is really great, Dominique. I think I might review the supplements I take on my blog, too, because people ask me all the time.
Most people with CFS have IBS. My problems improved dramatically when I took dairy out of my diet – it seems CFS has made me lactose-intolerant. So, I can’t take New Chapter’s Immunity probiotic because it’s dairy-based (like many probiotics), but I absolutely love New Chapter’s All-Flora – it’s a nondairy-based product with 10 different probiotic strains in it. I’ve been on high dose antibiotics for Lyme for almost 2 years now without any digestive issues at all because of the All-Flora (I doubled my dose when I got Lyme).
i still want to try the sinus product – just haven’t had a chance yet. Glad to hear this allergy season is so much better for you! We went through a bad period but are doing fine now.
Sue
.-= Sue Jackson´s last blog ..Movie Monday 5/3 =-.
Sue – As far as the lactose intolerant I have come to believe that it is the way our milk products are processed that causes the intolerance. There are actually articles and such that are now showing that. I started to wonder about how I could suddenly become lactose intolerant with ‘normal’ milk yet I could eat raw cheese and drink raw milk (or milk only pasteurized once) and not have any problems. Recently, I have started having problems with swallowing and choking when I eat cheeses like Cracker Barrel and such so I now eat raw or imported from France/Germany type cheeses.
How long does one have to be on anti-biotics for Lyme disease. It seems like you guys are on them for a really long time?
