"The Eagle Has Crashed"

Book Review: The Eagle Has Crashed by Ted Lacksonen

I recently had a friend ask me to read his new book, The Eagle Has Crashed, and I quickly said yes!  Ted has been someone who has been helping me to think outside the box when it comes to the plight of America and politics in general.  I respect his opinion deeply and was excited and honored to...

Lost 30 pounds by making 6 switches

On January 1st, of this year, I made a decision to no longer make New Year resolutions.  I have come to the place that, for me personally, these types of commitments or contracts, if you will, are more negative producing than naught.  However, I had a goal I wanted to work on so I needed to determine how I would complete it.

The first thing I knew I needed to do was to figure out what I would not do.  I knew I was not going to give up things I loved.  I knew I would not be exercising (for practical purposes – as I can’t exercise consistently). I knew I didn’t have a set dead line and I knew I would no longer even consider ‘dieting’.  I was so done with that.  So I decided I would start losing weight by…

‘switching’.

As a result of not being active, over-eating, and exhaustion eating, I found myself on January 1, 2010, one hundred pounds (100) over weight.  Most people are stunned when they learn the truth, but that, unfortunately, was my reality.  I knew I needed to lose weight for a variety of reasons.

One, I had to feel better pain wise as a result of not carrying all that extra weight.

Two, my right knee has several torn muscles that would benefit from less weight put on them.

Three, it would be an emotional boost.

Four, with some research suggesting heart problems in CFIDS, I knew less weight would be a positive as well.

Five, I just wanted to get back into my old size and not have to purchase ‘large’ clothes anymore.

I knew I could do this because I have a track record of completing my goals behind me that I could look at to motivate me, but I needed to do it in a way that worked within the boundaries of CFIDS.  For me, that way was switching.  I decided to switch from one ‘not so healthy’ item to something that was much more healthy ever single month.  Each month I would make one new switch.  Simple.  Direct.  Easy.  Thus, in the past 6 months, I have made the following 6 switches.

  1. January – switched from coke (except when sick) to (mostly decaf) tea, (decaf) coffee, and water.
  2. February – switched from butter to Ghee.
  3. March – switched from my favorite Scottish butter cookies to organic ginger snaps.
  4. April – switched from white rice to brown rice.
  5. May – switched from ginger snaps to gluten free peanut butter cookies/cut out most gluten products.
  6. June – switched from all meats to mainly fish and chicken. (only Alaskan wild caught fish and farm raised chicken)

Those are the only switches I made!  I didn’t exercise except when able and I did nothing more in that category except slow walking.  No dieting.  No pills.  No skipping meals.  Nothing.  Here is an example of what a meal or snack might look like today.

"Omlett and Fruit"

Mushroom Rosemary Omelete with Fruit

"Veggie Sald with Eggs"

Veggie Salad with Eggs and homemade Rosemary Dressing

"Snack"

A snack of my favorite cheese, Brie (from France) and farm fresh Strawberries

As a result of joining my local co-op, Natural Farms, I am now eating 60% of my diet raw.  I had a little trouble adjusting the first month, but now, I love it.  I thought it would be hard to do when I was wiped out, but truth be told, grabbing a fruit and some cheese is a no brainer.  I usually have some veggies and fruit already sliced up just in case.  I also have been making soups ahead for those days I don’t feel like cooking.

The great thing about this new way of eating, however, is that I am still eating out, still eating ice cream (Haagen Daz 5 ingredients – Coffee), and still eating my cookies or whatever I want for snacks.  I eat what I want when I want.  No weighing.  No counting calories.  Not counting fats.  Nothing.

Here is a photo of what my veggie/fruit bag looks like that I get delivered every week.

"Veggie and Fruit Bag"

Veggie/Fruit Bag

This will usually last me about eight -ten (8 – 10) days so I have a little overlap.  Now the awesome news.  Since January 1st, I have now lost 30 pounds and 20 inches!  Yup!  Amazing.  So much for all those ‘specialists’ who declare we must exercise ourselves silly in order to lose weight.  I would say, not so much.

In the first four months of this year, I averaged about four to five (4-5) pounds of weight loss a month.  However, in May I got quite the surprise.  I lost TEN (10) pounds!  I was stunned!  I’m totally stoked.  I have been wanting to lose weight for a while but deciding what to do has been a quandary.  Joining my local co-op and buying all my food farm raised was a great decision.  Then doing the ‘switch’ proved to be the key for me.

One side note, however.  Eating this way has meant I need to take my digestive enzymes at every meal and keep on top of the pro-biotics and nightly colon cleanse, otherwise, I get a little constipated.  Too much fiber is a challenge for me since developing CFIDS.  As long as a take the pro-biotics, digestive enzymes and cleanse, though, I am good to go.

What a great way to start summer!  :-)

Determined to continue forward,

What a great way to loose weight indeed. What a gift we give ourselves when we eat healthy. I love fresh fruit and veggies and I think they are the most important things in our diet….also, the more local the better. We are just coming into season for some local foods here – can’t wait.

upnorth – We have had the local farm foods now for the past several weeks. I love the variety I get and the smell and taste is amazing! One good thing about living in the midwest, our farm stands start towards the end of May!

Linda – Thank you! ha ha! I love your enthusiasm! Glad I could help. It’s amazing, once the body understands you aren’t eating the
‘bad’ stuff anymore, how quick the weight comes off. Without exercise, no less! Love that! I can’t wait to here your weight loss story when you succeed, Linda!

Renee – Thank you! It is so frustrating that we pack on the weight, isn’t it. I hope you have as much, if not more, success than I have!

I have to be honest. I had NO idea that uterine cancer was caused by obesity! Yikes. Who would have thought? I guess that is another good reason for me to keep at this! Wow!

Wonderful you found a way to lose weight that is sensible and
do-able. Wish I could drive to our summer farmer’s markets.
Odd – it seems if I open e-mail first while online I can’t come
here. So today I went here first and arrived! Been too exhausted
to call AOL tech services again. But eventually ….
Hope the mold problem is no longer making you sick and that they
are fixing it the correct way.

    • Dominique June 2, 2010 at 3:34 pm

Patricia – I’m sorry about your ongoing computer problems. Boy do I understand that frustration. The mold has been taken care of. Weird. I thought I did a post on that? Maybe not. I will check on that.

Can you get the vegetables and fruits delivered to you? That’s what I do. I don’t go get them, they bring them to me. If you go online you might be able to find a co-op and they usually will deliver.

I’m sorry you are so exhausted again. I hope you start feeling better soon. :-)

Sending hugs and prayers your way!

It is awesome you found something that works. Did you read a book to obtain any extra info? I am inspired especially since I know you also have a thyroid condition and not being able to exercise like me and still lost weight.

    Bravo!

Kimberly – No. Believe it or not, I came up with this on my own. I was done with dieting. Done! So I decided to figure out what I would do and wouldn’t do and went from there. Thanks! :-)

Sounds like a plan to me. Wing it LOL

WOOHOO!!! Way to go, Dominique! That’s great – good for you. I would love to go to all local produce. Our local nature center just started a farm delivery program. We didn’t sign up yet, but I’d like to. I’m worried I won’t be able to plan our meals around whatever we receive. I have my own meal planning approach now that works well for me. But I really do want to switch to all local. The data on dangers of pesticides keeps growing, and it drives me crazy when – like now – local strawberries are ripe and the grocery store is still selling those huge, tasteless berries from California. I wish I were well enough to go tot he farmer’s market every week, but I barely manage the one trip to the grocery store! I’m sure it’s all much simpler for one person! I do now try to avoid buying produce out of season or from other countries.

    Anyway, bravo to you!!

I want to eat just the way you do. I’m getting serious because
of my high blood glucose test. I’m fortunate I don’t have to
lose weight; in fact need to gain a couple pounds.
Thanks for the idea of an online co-op that might be able to
deliver. I ran into problems with regular grocery store online
ordering/delivering because they were only set up to take credit
cards and don’t accept food stamps. It might be the same with a co-op.
Unfortunately I cannot drive the distance to natural food stores
that provide better food. Also the person who works for a Home Health
Company that comes once a week is limitted in mileage they allow
her and pay for. I could pay her mileage to go further but it
would use up most of her time alotted per week and I need her to
do the hard weekly chores like mopping my tiled family room. etc.
Sounds like I have some challenges to work out. I sure like your
idea of the “switches” The first thing I’m doing is to really really
limit obvious sugar in candy, ice cream, pastries.
Sounds like Sue has some of the same concerns. Yes I also need to
buy in season. It is so easy to just take what comes easily which
for me is sending Leslie to Fred Meyer’s – but boy it is difficult
to do the best that way. I’m like Sue — and I don’t even go myself
once a week – Leslie goes for me. I’m fortunate her help is free
from Oregon Project Independence. WEll I’m really going on too long
But this subject of eating real and good food is so important and
there is so much wrong with the food at a typical grocery store.
I guess all we can do is do what we can do. Now I’m going to
try to make some changes and remember to do it on a slow, ongoing -
ongoing is the key basis. Thanks for being so generous when I get
    over chatty.
I’m wanting to do to reverse pre-diabetes just what you
are doing – farm fed chicken, wild caught fish, lots of veges and
fruits, unrefined carbs. It really penetrated my short term memory and got to
long term – this I will truly pay attention to – if there are
more than five ingredients listed on a packaged food – this is not
food but the food industry’s chemical concotion to promote long
shelf life not good health for the consumer.

    • Dominique June 2, 2010 at 9:24 pm

Patricia – I can tell you that our co-op accepts food stamps. So I would think if one does, there is a real chance that one near you does. I don’t know if you can rent videos, or even afford to, but netflix delivers to your house if you can. Anyway, if you can, you should watch the movie, Food Inc. It will radically change your opinion of our food supply. I almost threw up after watching that movie. And now when I eat out, I eat a lot less because I know where it comes from. Yuck.

Love you girl! How’s Sammy doing?

Congratulations, Dominique. That is really inspiring. The weight gain with CFS is something that is difficult to deal with. One of my goals is to lose some weight as well. I’ll have to keep in mind your long-term approach and try switching.
