I chose, Embracing Your Second Calling, because I thought the subject matter would be one that I would find interesting.
The tone of the book is very easy, warm and inviting, much like one might find when two friends sit down and have a cup of tea.
The book is brimming with suggestions, ideas and wisdom and is most definitely a book that will appeal to many women who are leaving one career and wondering what lies ahead.
For me, personally, I found the book very disjointed which made it very hard for me to stick with the reader. In the passages where the author was speaking from her own experience, I felt she had credibility.
However, inter-mingled with those sections were two other types of passages that just didn’t work for me. In one, the author starts sharing tools/books from other people that she has found useful. At first, I was highlighting them and thinking I might order them for myself. However, as time went on and she added more and more of these tools/books, I became – well, to be honest – bored. I kept wondering why I was reading this book if all these other authors had so much wisdom to offer. I also started questioning the author’s credibility since it seemed to hinge on the credibility of others.
In addition, also inter-mingled with the author’s personal story and experience was her interpretation of Naomi which just did not work for me, and I was disappointed as Noami’s story is one of my favorites.
This switching back and forth created a sever in any connection I had with the author when she was sharing her personal experience or her personal story.
For me, in the end, this book was very ADD – meaning it was always jumping from one thing to another and then back again. Because of this, the book was disjointed and not coherent throughout. Additionally, much of what the author shared was not new information for me, nor was it something I was struggling with.
Having said that, I do think this book has a valuable message for those women who may have never heard this message before.
